Improvement Focused Player Evaluations

I get several requests each season for a way to evaluate players. I like this system because it can be used in-season, post season, or to set your goals for summer skill development.
I received this system from Jeff Dadio (@coachDaddio) at Farmington High School in Farmington, Connecticut.
If you like this system, I have a link at the end of the article for you do download the PDF. Take this system, and tweak it so that it fits your players. One idea you might implement is for the players to rate themselves before seeing how you would rate them. That will help you to understand how they see themselves, as well as give them some ownership in their own development.
The acronym is for Skills, Mind, Athleticism, Spirit, and Heart.
Skills make up the first half and the second half is made of athleticism and intangibles.
Another great way to Improve Your Program is with a new scorers table, video display, or digital scoreboard from Sideline Interactive

Mind is what is sometimes referred to as “basketball I.Q.” It is a player’s ability to think the game both as a whole and within their individual matchup.
Athleticism contains the measurables- speed, strength, height and more with an even split of movement and body.
Spirit refers to emotional characteristics with a focus on attitude. It is broken up into leadership, selflessness and commitment.
Heart is a player’s drive, determination and motivation level.
All 5 components of a SMASH player can be improved and the evaluation rubric helps each player do just that. It is all part of the journey to build the best, most complete basketball players- the SMASH players.
